Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. There are three types of cannabinoids: endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, and synthetic cannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are produced by the body; phytocannabinoids are created in plants; and synthetic cannabinoids are manufactured artificially. Examples of cannabinoids include THC, CBD, CBDA, and CBG. There are more than 110 cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant.

Hemp is a class of the plant Cannabis sativa, and is closely related to marijuana. By FDA definition, hemp contains less than 0.3% of THC by dry weight. Any Cannabis sativa plant that contains more than 0.3% of THC by dry weight is classified as marijuana, as it has a higher concentration of the psychoactive cannabinoid. Hemp is often used as an industrial material, textile, and supplement ingredient.

Cannabidiol, otherwise known as CBD, is one of 110 naturally occurring phytocannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, CBD does not cause any psychoactivity, which contributes to its federal legalization.

Because the endocannabinoid system is as unique to each person as their fingerprint, everyone’s response to CBD is different. As cannabinoids bind to specific receptors throughout the brain and body, they regulate the endocannabinoid system to promote homeostasis and overall wellness. CBD is one of many cannabinoids found within the Cannabis sativa plant, and is generally not known to produce a psychoactive or “mind-altering” effect. On the other hand, marijuana refers to parts of or products from either the Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, or Cannabis ruderalis plants that have a high concentration of the psychoactive cannabinoid, THC. The chemical compound CBD exists in marijuana, but in much lower concentrations than does THC.

There is no “best way” to use CBD, as its effects on the endocannabinoid system may vary from person to person. However, due to its legal status and commercial availability, a number of different product types and concentrations exist, giving you the chance to test what works best for your unique needs.
